South Shropshire Furniture Scheme, a registered charity, started in 1994 in response to a need expressed by our community. We collect donated furniture and household items to deliver to people on low incomes living in South Shropshire. To assist our sustainability have diversified considerably to deliver a range of training particularly aimed at the disadvantaged, but open to all, in accessible premises.

The Renaissance Centre includes our retail outlet for our restored products, providing training and employment opportunities, raises awareness to the benefits of reuse, recycling and sustainable lifestyles and generating income - enabling our social enterprise to continue providing its valuable services. The centre also houses HECTOR, an environmental information point, providing facts on the recycling of common household materials such as plastics, glass and paper by use of a touch screen kiosk. We also have a tearoom, run by volunteers, for the thirsty visitor - also providing training opportunities in catering.

Now also a book store, selling low cost hard and paper back used books.

Keep Shropshire Warm is a DEFRA supported countywide initiative with the aim of reducing the amount that a household spends in order to heat their property. The South Shropshire Furniture Scheme and Keep Shropshire Warm have worked in partnership to assist over 400 households in the South Shropshire area since the launch of the initiative in January. The households assisted have all received advice and help regarding keeping their home warm for less but have also received financial help to install either loft or cavity wall insulation… This could potentially save each dwelling between £40 and £170 per year on their fuel bills.

To find out more about Keep Shropshire Warm and how it can help you, please visit www.keepshropshirewarm.org or pop in to see Serena on Mondays at The Renaissance Centre, 7-8 Tower Street, Ludlow . Telephone 01584 877751 serena@furniturescheme.co.uk

We sell a range of recycled items online. Our carpentry workshop is helping to address the shortage of craftsmen in this area and we provide modern apprenticeships to young people. The training is wide and varied and includes furniture restoration, cabinet making, joinery and general woodwork skills.

Do as I say or the SOFA gets it

Did you know that if we could save all the furniture that councils are currently dumping, we would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 4 million tonnes, that is roughly equivalent to taking 1 million medium sized cars off our roads or 12 million return flights to Europe . Our computer-recycling workshop is popular with the young (and not so young) who can gain a qualification in this fast growing field. The training programme has provided improved skills for the individuals taking part, which in turn enhances their greater personal development for the future. The computers are donated by the public and by local authorities when systems are upgraded. The end product is a basic computer that is sold at low cost to people on low income who are training but cannot afford to purchase a new compute. Those computers that cannot be refurbished are sorted into their various components and bulked up for recycling.
