How we started
Moving house is said to be one of the most stressful events in people's lives. Setting up home for the first time without the money or the means to the affordable financial support from banks etc. that others take for granted, can leave vulnerable people in an impossible situation before they even begin a tenancy
The South Shropshire Furniture Scheme was started in 1994 to address a growing need to find a way to reuse and recycle unwanted household items. Since then more that 12000 people have donated household items, and around 2,500 families and individuals have received help from our scheme.
The work of the scheme has directly placed resources into the homes of some of the most excluded members of our community, ensuring these people can begin to build an independent life and home. Without this support young care beavers, people starting an independent life, people with learning disabilities and people dealing with mental ill health would end up in increasing debt and would find the cost of their own needs impossible to maintain
The South Shropshire Furniture Scheme has been around for twelve years now - helping as many as seven families and individuals each week. People donate furniture and household items that are suitable for reuse and our volunteers collect the items free of charge from anywhere in the South Shropshire District. These items are delivered to people on low income who are in desperate need of essential household items.
